BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) - Officials in a Vermont town have approved the purchase of a new firetruck and the construction of a skate park.

The Brattleboro Reformer reports Brattleboro officials met Saturday to discuss both items.

Officials voted to pay for a firetruck with a working ladder with $450,000 from the town’s surplus fund. The town will use a $500,000 loan to finance the rest.

Select Board Vice Chairwoman Brandi Starr criticized the vote, saying using money from the fund is irresponsible.

Officials voted to give $60,000 to the skate park project through raised taxes. The project has been in the works for nearly a decade.

Officials say the park will help keep children in the community engaged.
