SALEM, N.H. (AP) - An audit of the police department in Salem, New Hampshire, by the town manager makes numerous suggestions, but also expresses concern about the department’s culture.

The Eagle-Tribune reports Town Manager Chris Dillon’s audit reviews how police handle time and attendance, and investigations of citizen complaints.

The “culture” section talks of managers who ignore or encourage an environment where there’s complete disregard for the town’s authority.

Deputy Police Chief Robert Morin responded the department will work to implement a number of recommendations. But he said “significant portions” are “without merit and contain speculation, opinion and hearsay presented as fact without any attempt to seek the truth from first-person witnesses.”

Five of the department’s approximate 100 members, and current and past town managers and human resources employees were interviewed for the audit, released by Kroll’s Inc.
