JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a police officer in South Carolina shot and killed a man who fired a shot when they were fighting on the ground.

Charleston County Sheriff’s Capt. Roger Antonio said the man was threatening to shoot his wife and her friends Friday on Johns Island.

Investigators said two deputies spoke to 24-year-old Joseph Dawson, but he pulled a gun and they tackled him and started fighting.

Antonio says Dawson fired one shot as they struggled, and one deputy fired back, killing him.

Antonio says investigators recovered Dawson’s gun at the scene.

The officers have been put on administrative leave. Their names have not been released. They weren’t hurt.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating. Spokesman Thom Berry says the deputy who fired and Dawson are both white.
