VICTORVILLE, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a suspect has been shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies responding to reports of an assault in Southern California.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department says the woman, who was not immediately identified, died at the scene Tuesday in Victorville.

Officials say the shooting occurred as deputies made contact with the suspect near a used car lot in the city east of Los Angeles. They didn’t say what prompted the deputies to open fire or whether the woman was armed.

TV news footage shows a white Mercedes with shattered windows.

Investigators did not say who was involved in the initial assault.

Several streets were closed during the investigation.
