Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden called for civility Thursday after he became one of multiple high-profile Democrats who were sent apparent pipe bombs in the mail this week.

“Folks, we don’t have all the facts yet, and we don’t know who’s behind this or why they’re doing it,” Mr. Biden said at the State University of New York at Buffalo, NBC News reported. “But as my mother used to say, ‘Out of something bad, Joey, something good will come if you look hard enough for it.’

“And my hope is this recent [spate] of these — who knows exactly what they were — but these pipe bombs being mailed, might wake everybody in my business up a little bit and realize that we have to begin to put this country back together again,” he continued.

“This division, this hatred, this ugliness — it has to end. Words matter,” he said. “I’ve never, never, never, ever looked at a political opponent as an enemy — an opponent and a contest of ideas, but not an enemy. Americans is who we are. We’re Americans before we’re Democrats or Republicans or independents. And, ladies and gentlemen, the press is not the enemy of the people. Immigrants are not animals. My hope and prayer is that all of our leaders will work to lower the temperature in our public dialogue, and I have faith that they will do that.”

Mr. Biden was sent two of at least 12 rudimentary but functional pipe bombs that were also sent to fellow Democrats Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Eric Holder and others.

None of the bombs detonated, and no one was injured.

Mr. Biden had similar words earlier in the day Thursday at an event supporting Democratic congressional candidate Nathan McMurray at the Olive Tree restaurant in Lancaster.

“We’ve got to get off this hate machine. We’ve got to come together,” Mr. Biden told patrons, The Buffalo News reported.

“I hope this has been enough of a shock wave to say, ‘OK, enough is enough,’” he said.
