PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a New Jersey teenager was shot multiple times at close range by someone wielding a paintball gun.

But it’s still not clear what spurred the attack.

Paterson police say the 14-year-old boy was shot 20 to 25 times at close range Monday night when he went to answer the door at his family’s home. They say the person surprised the teen, who was hospitalized with severe welts and deep bruising on his arms, legs and torso.

The teen’s name has not been released. His mother has said her son believes the shooter is the older brother of a classmate, but doesn’t know why the attack occurred.

Authorities say the attack remains under investigation.
