House Democrats scoffed Friday at Republicans framing the 2020 election as vote against socialism, saying it’s a sign President Trump and his party are out of ideas.

“Oh come on,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters at a press conference. “Why don’t they make it a referendum on a positive suggestion they’ve made happen for the good of the American people?”

Mr. Trump has blasted Democratic proposals such as the Green New Deal and “Medicare for All” as socialist fantasies that would leave the country broke.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday told reporters he’s urging GOP senators to run on providing voters with a “firewall against socialism.”

New Jersey Congressman Tom Malinowski, who was born in Poland while that country was still under communist rule, said Democrats will counter Republican attacks on socialism by pointing at Mr. Trump.

“If a president who is in love with a communist dictator Kim Jong Un wants to come after me on that, bring it on,” he said.
