Michael Avenatti, the former lawyer for porn star Stormy Daniels who is facing a 36-count federal indictment, threw his support behind former Vice President Joe Biden in the 2020 Democratic primary.

Mr. Avenatti on Thursday tweeted his “enthusiastic support” for Mr. Biden several hours after the former vice president formally announced his third bid for the presidency.

“I am extremely happy that @JoeBiden has decided to enter the race,” Mr. Avenatti wrote. “He offers Dems the very best chance in 2020, especially in key states. He has the fight, intelligence and fortitude to beat Trump and begin to make America, America again. He has my enthusiastic support.”

Earlier this month, federal prosecutors in California announced 36 new charges against Mr. Avenatti, accusing him of bilking clients out of millions of dollars and failing to file or pay his taxes for several years, expanding on a case already underway in the Central District of California and another ongoing in the Southern District of New York.

Mr. Avenatti has denied any wrongdoing.
