According to “Muslims clash with Israeli police at Jerusalem holy site” (Web, Aug. 11), “Muslim worshipers and Israeli police clashed Sunday at a major Jerusalem holy site during prayers marking the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha.”

Last Sunday was also a Jewish holy day: Tisha B’Av, the Ninth of Av, when Jews mourn the Babylonians’ destruction of the first Jewish temple and the Roman destruction of the second Jewish temple, and the dispersal of the Jewish people from their ancestral land both times.

Israeli police were trying to protect Jewish people who had received permission to ascend to the Temple Mount and pray and mourn the destruction of both temples, as well as other tragic events that resulted from the diaspora. Muslims were harassing and preventing the Jews from ascending to and praying and mourning at the most holy site of the Jewish people. Jews did not attempt to harass or prevent the Muslims from observing their holy day.

Muslims should not harass or prevent Jews or any other faith from observing their holy days. Real peace can come only when all Muslims show the tolerance for others that Muslims demand from all of us.
