A Republican congressional candidate in Georgia has dropped out of the race amid backlash for calling himself a “proud white nationalist.”

Donnie Bolena, a longshot candidate who was looking to unseat Democratic Rep. Lucy McBath, posted a lengthy Facebook video this week, two days after he identified himself as a “white nationalist,” that said he ultimately decided to withdraw from the race under pressure from the local Fulton County Republican Party, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

“I said I was a proud white nationalist,” Mr. Bolena, wearing a red re-elect President Trump hat, said in the video. “Due to the shootings that happened in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, I was very aggravated and very mad at the way the liberal media comes after conservatives. It comes after our Second Amendment.”

Mr. Bolena said the chair of the party approached him about dropping out, but the party has not confirmed his claims. David Shafer, the chairman of the Georgia GOP, declined to comment to USA Today.

“I was told, ‘Donnie, if you stay in it, and CNN breaks this story, you’re going to hurt President Trump, and you’re going to hurt District 6, and you’re going to hurt the country. They will use this to destroy every Republican,’” Mr. Bolena recalled in the video.

“I said, ‘I am so sick of being at attacked for being white.’ Why are white people apologizing for being white? What is wrong with them,” he said. “I don’t see no black people out there apologizing for being black. And I don’t see no Asian people out there apologizing for being Asian. I don’t get it.”

Still, Mr. Bolena said he’s dropping the word “nationalist” and has created a Facebook page for the Ultra Conservative Party, a closed group with more than 3,000 members.
