Former Republican Gov. Nikki Haley scolded President Trump for a tweet Friday that appeared to mock Rep. Elijah Cummings for an attempted burglary on the congressman’s Baltimore home.

Mr. Trump, responding to reports that Mr. Cummings was the victim of an attempted break-in, tweeted Friday morning: “Really bad news! The Baltimore house of Elijah Cummings was robbed. Too bad!”

“This is so unnecessary,” responded Ms. Haley, the former governor of South Carolina who served as Mr. Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations from 2017 to 2018.

Mr. Trump’s latest tweet is part of an ongoing feud with Mr. Cummings, chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, over living conditions and corruption in Baltimore, which the president has called a “rat and rodent infested mess.”

Mr. Trump’s earlier remarks were condemned by Democrats as racist, but Ms. Haley defended the president as trying to help the predominantly black city.

“Instead of all of this back and forth about who everyone thinks is racist and who is not, the President just offered to help the people of Baltimore,” she tweeted Tuesday. “They should take him up on it. Let’s put the same energy into where it will make a difference.”
