The Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network is denying any formal affiliation with a purported New Jersey chapter director who defended an education official for speaking the “truth” when she called Jews “brutes” in response to the anti-Semitic shooting in Jersey City.

“She said nothing wrong,” Carolyn Oliver Fair, a woman quoted as the executive director of NAN’s North Jersey Chapter, told NJ.com Wednesday. “Everything she said is the truth. So where is this anti-Semitism coming in? I am not getting it.”

Ms. Fair was referring to Joan Terrell-Paige, a Jersey City Board of Education member who sparked outrage earlier this week for calling Jews “brutes” in response to last week’s anti-Semitic shooting at a local kosher supermarket that left four people dead and rocked the city’s growing Jewish community.

“Where was all this faith and hope when Black homeowners were threatened, intimidated, and harassed by I WANT TO BUY YOUR HOUSE brutes of the jewish community,” Ms. Terrell-Paige, who is black, wrote in a now-deleted Facebook comment that has sparked calls for her resignation.

In defending Ms. Terrell-Paige’s comments, Ms. Fair said critics should just “shut their mouths” and falsely asserted that the shooters who carried out the Dec. 10 attack were Jewish, NJ.com reported.

The National Action Network issued a statement “unequivocally” denouncing Ms. Terrell-Paige’s comments as anti-Semitic and saying Ms. Fair “does not hold a formal role” with the organization.

“Carolyn Oliver Fair does not speak on behalf of NAN nor is she the Executive Director of the North Jersey NAN chapter,” said Steffie Bartley, NAN’s Northeast Regional Director. “She is not a staff member or hold any salaried position. Her comments do not represent the views of Rev. Al Sharpton or any affiliated NAN leader.”
