Sen. Marco Rubio on Tuesday slammed the left-wing media’s “deranged criticism” of first lady Melania Trump’s Christmas decorations at the White House.

“Even the @WhiteHouse Christmas decorations triggers deranged criticism,” the Florida Republican tweeted. “Does anyone in the world of major media have enough self awareness to realize the damage their hatred of @realdonaldtrump is inflicting on them & journalism?”

Mrs. Trump’s theme for this year’s White House display is “The Spirit of America,” which The Daily Beast’s Alaina Demopoulos called “joyless” and “the most sterile” of the first lady’s three attempts at holiday decorating. Meanwhile, The Washington Post approved of the decorations but ripped the first lady’s winter coat as “ridiculous.”

“But more than a silly fashion folly, the coat is a distraction,” said Post fashion critic Robin Givhan. “It’s a discomforting affectation taken to a ludicrous extreme. In a video that is intended to celebrate the warmth and welcoming spirit of the holiday season, that simple flourish exudes cold, dismissive aloofness.”

White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham, who previously served under Mrs. Trump, said the media’s reaction to the decorations had become something of an annual tradition.

“It has become an annual holiday tradition for the media to attack all that the first lady does. If this was a Democratic administration, I suspect Mrs. Trump and her work would be featured positively in every mainstream news outlet,” Ms. Grisham told Fox News’ Brian Flood.
