A Kansas police officer is out of a job after he confessed to fabricating a story about a McDonald’s employee writing “f—-ing pig” on his cup, the police chief said Monday.

Herington Police Chief Brian Hornaday said in a news conference that an investigation determined no McDonald’s employee wrote the statement and that the 23-year-old officer had fabricated what happened “as a joke.”

“In the investigation [by Herington police and McDonald’s], we have found that McDoanld’s and its employees did not have anything whatsoever to do with this incident,” Chief Hornaday said, The Wichita Eagle reported. “This was completely and solely fabricated by a Herington police officer who is no longer employed with our agency.”

Chief Hornaday had originally posted on Facebook that one of his officers was handed the cup Saturday when he went through the McDonald’s drive-thru in Junction City, writing that “this behavior has been, is and always will be wrong.”

That post has either been deleted or set to private.

McDonald’s conducted its own investigation into the incident, announcing Monday that surveillance video proved no employee wrote the words.

Chief Hornaday said the officer eventually admitted to faking the story and resigned after only two months with the department.

“The investigation that I conducted showed that this was meant to be a joke,” the police chief said, The Eagle reported. “However, we can see that how something so serious can get so out of control very, very quickly. The most important thing that could have been done and should have been done in this scenario would be to come forward immediately … however, unfortunately that was not done.”

“What I do not want to happen here is for the American public to look at this situation and call into question the integrity of any other officer in this country,” he said.
