Documentary filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the wife of California’s new governor, Gavin Newsom, has ditched the “first lady” title in favor “first partner” in an apparent nod to gender equality.

Mrs. Newsom hasn’t explained her reasoning for the decision but her Twitter bio was changed to say “First Partner of California” on Monday, the same day her husband was inaugurated in Sacramento.

“Today was joyous beyond measure, and it is the honor of a lifetime to serve the people of California,” she tweeted at the time. “Gavin-I love you, I’m so grateful for this journey with you, and I’m already so proud of the way you are using your courageous heart and brilliant mind to lead this great state.”

Mrs. Newsom’s page on the governor’s official website also describes her as “First Partner.” According to her bio, Mrs. Newsom wrote, directed, and produced the 2011 documentary “Miss Representation,” the 2015 documentary “The Mask You Live In” and is currently wrapping up her third documentary, “The Great American Lie.”

She and Mr. Newsom married in 2008 and have four children together. The governor was previously married to former Fox News host Kimberly Guilfoyle, who is now dating Donald Trump Jr, CBS News reported.
