AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The state is opening up a new office to connect rural residents in eastern Washington County with public assistance.

The Maine Department of Health and Human Services in an announcement Thursday says it expects to open the office in October in Calais.

Specialists at the office will help process applications and renewables for public assistance programs.

The department’s previous office in Calais closed in October 2016 and served about 21 clients per day. Eligibility specialists were then available one day per week at a satellite site in Calais, which the state increased to two days per week in March.
