RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The Latest on candidate filing in a new election for a still-vacant North Carolina congressional seat (all times local):

6:55 p.m.

A former state legislator and candidate for governor has jumped unexpectedly into the race for a North Carolina congressional seat after a November election was deemed tainted and in need of a do-over.

Fern Shubert filed Monday to run in the May 14 Republican primary for the 9th Congressional District seat. Stony Rushing also filed as a GOP candidate. Both are from Union County, a heavily Republican part of the district.

Also filing Monday was Libertarian Jeff Scott.

Rushing is backed by 2018 GOP candidate Mark Harris. Harris opted not to run after witnesses testified at a hearing that a political operative working for him in rural Bladen County collected mail-in ballots, making votes vulnerable to tampering.

Democrat Dan McCready ran last year and says he’ll run again.

Candidate filing ends Friday.

Political parties hold their primary elections May 14. The general election is scheduled for Sept. 10. That date could be used for a primary runoff if candidates don’t receive more than 30 percent of the votes.
