A top executive at Dunkin’ Brands, the parent company of Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin Robbins, reportedly told an audience Monday that the company has no plans to wade into the political conversation like its biggest rival, Starbucks.

“We are not Starbucks, we aren’t political,” Dunkin’ Brands VP of brand stewardship Drayton Martin said at a law conference in Boston, Yahoo Finance reported.

“We don’t want to engage you in political conversation, we want to get you in and out of our store in seconds,” Ms. Martin said, according to multiple tweets from attendees.

“We don’t want people burning their Munchkin boxes,” she reportedly added.

Ms. Martin made the comments at the 2019 meeting of the International Trademark Association, speaking on a lunch panel that also included director of legal counsel Alana Sharenow and director of retail business development Chuck Kantner, Yahoo reported.



Starbucks has a long history of thrusting itself into the political conversation, irking the conservative right by phasing out Christmas-themed coffee cups, asking customers to leave their guns at home, supporting the legalization of same-sex marriage, and pledging to hire thousands of refugees in response to President Trump’s 2017 travel ban.

Dunkin’ appeared to support Ms. Martin’s comments, telling The Boston Globe in a statement that it’s committed to providing a “welcoming environment” for everyone.

“For nearly 70 years, Dunkin’ has been a daily ritual for millions of people and we are proud to keep America running,” the statement read. “Dunkin’ is committed to creating a welcoming environment for people who bring different perspectives, and regardless of your views we can all agree that everyone deserves great coffee, fast.”
