LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Water service is being suspended at two Arkansas prisons for repair work on a water pump.
The Arkansas Department of Correction said Tuesday that a water pump that serves the Tucker and Maximum Security units experienced a mechanical failure and service had to be suspended Monday night. Portable tanks were brought in to provide water for drinking, cooking and bathing. Also, water service is temporarily restored at regular intervals to allow for the flushing of toilets.
The department says it has hired a water management company to repair the pump. Once repairs are completed, the system will be required to pass 2 consecutive bacteriological tests on two consecutive days before water from the system can be consumed.
The two prisons house about 1,660 inmates.
