LAVALLETTE, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a motorist was under the influence of drugs when he struck and killed an 83-year-old pedestrian last month.

Ocean County prosecutors say Brian Kosanke is charged with vehicular homicide, hindering apprehension, driving while intoxicated and drug offenses in the Oct. 19 crash in Lavallette. It wasn’t known Friday if he’s retained an attorney.

Authorities have said the 39-year-old Lavallette man was northbound on Route 35 when he hit Thomas Castronovo. The Warren man was taken to a hospital but died there a short time later.

Kosanke allegedly was high on cocaine, Xanax and other drugs at the time. Authorities say surveillance footage shows Kosanke hid heroin on the side of the road before police arrived, then retrieved it after being released from the hospital
