An Iowa high school teacher is out of the classroom for allegedly posting about a “sniper rifle” in reference to an upcoming visit by 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.

Greta, who reached viral fame last month for her dramatic speech at the U.N. Climate Action Summit in New York, joined a student-led climate strike demonstration in Iowa City on Friday.

A Facebook post allegedly written by Matt Baish, a West High School science teacher, reacted to news of the visit on Facebook with the comment, “Dont [sic] have my sniper rifle,” The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reported.

Waterloo Community Schools said Friday that the teacher had been placed on administrative leave while it investigates the situation.

“We were made aware of the concerning content yesterday morning and the investigation commenced at that point,” district spokeswoman Tara Thomas said, The Courier reported. “Administrative leave was enacted once things were confirmed, so to speak. The staff member has not been back in the classroom since we were made aware of the content.”

Ms. Thomas declined to comment on what discipline the teacher could face.
