Matt Drudge of Drudge Report fame issued a rare public statement over the weekend after President Trump claimed his website’s readership was dropping.

“I gave up on Drudge (a really nice guy) long ago, as have many others,” the president tweeted Saturday. “People are dropping off like flies!”

Mr. Trump and his supporters have noticed a shift in Mr. Drudge’s coverage of the president in the past year, accusing the longtime conservative must-read of adopting a leftist bent. Multiple conservative news aggregators, including Dan Bongino’s The Bongino Report, have since launched in an effort to scoop up Mr. Drudge’s readers.

But despite Mr. Trump’s claim, Mr. Drudge said his web traffic is better than ever.

“The past 30 days has been the most eyeballs in Drudge Report’s 26 year-history,” Mr. Drudge said in an email to CNN.

“Heartbreaking that it has been under such tragic circumstances,” he added, referring to the coronavirus pandemic.

CNN reported that web analytics data also did not support Mr. Trump’s claim that Drudge was losing readers.

“In fact, page view data directly from the Drudge Report’s server, provided to CNN by a person with access to the numbers, shows no significant traffic dips since January 2019,” CNN reported. “The data shows a significant traffic surge in March, up to 1.2 billion page views from 781 million page views in February.”
