Rep. Maxine Waters announced Thursday that her sister is dying in a St. Louis hospital after contracting the coronavirus.

“I’m going to take a moment to dedicate this legislation to my dear sister who is dying in a hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, right now, infected by the coronavirus,” the California Democrat, chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee, said on the House floor.

Ms. Waters was speaking in support of the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act, which is expected to pass a House vote Thursday and will allocate $370 billion in funding to small businesses and $100 billion to hospitals and coronavirus testing.

The news comes only hours after Sen. Elizabeth Warren announced her oldest brother had died from the virus.

Don Reed Herring died of the coronavirus Tuesday. He was 86.
