LAS VEGAS (AP) - Nevada health officials on Tuesday reported the lowest daily increase of new coronavirus cases statewide in more than a month, and 18 additional deaths.

As he reported 548 new cases of COVID-19 since Monday, state response chief Caleb Cage noted what he called a stabilization after several weeks of the number of new infections being diagnosed daily, and a decrease in reported hospitalizations.

Statewide hospital occupancy rates were 71%, and intensive care units were at 61% occupancy.

The state Department of Health and Human Services last reported fewer daily new cases at 516 on July 7. The number went to 608 new cases July 8.

On Tuesday, the number of known cases in the state reached 57,520, with at least 981 known deaths since the pandemic began.

The Southern Nevada Health District reported that 828 deaths have been in the Las Vegas area, or 84% of the state total.

For most people, the virus causes mild or moderate symptoms for up to three weeks.

Older adults and people with existing health problems can face severe illness and death. The vast majority of people recover.
