Former NFL quarterback and social justice activist Colin Kaepernick has teamed up with Ben & Jerry’s to create a new vegan ice cream flavor supporting the “defund the police” movement.

Mr. Kaepernick, who advocates for the complete abolition of police and prisons, announced the new venture Thursday morning. The new flavor is vegan, like Mr. Kaepernick, and all proceeds will benefit his Know Your Rights Camp, a program for Black and brown children that teaches community activism and combating “systemic” racism.

“I’m honored to partner with Ben & Jerry’s on Change the Whirled,” Mr. Kaepernick said in a press release. “Their commitment to challenging the anti-Black roots of policing in the United States demonstrates a material concern for the wellbeing of Black and Brown communities. My hope is that this partnership will amplify calls to defund and abolish the police and to invest in futures that can make us safer, healthier, and truly free.”

“Colin Kaepernick and his Know Your Rights Camp is the perfect partner for Ben & Jerry’s to continue to advance our work on issues of racial justice,” Matthew McCarthy, CEO of Ben & Jerry’s, said in a statement. “Ben & Jerry’s is proud to diversify our flavor portfolio by honoring Kaepernick with a full-time flavor. We deeply respect how Colin uses his voice to protest racism, white supremacy and police violence through the belief that ‘love is at the root of our resistance.’ We have tremendous hope in what we can accomplish together.”

Mr. Kaepernick recently published a writing series titled, “Abolition For The People,” in which he called for the abolition of police and prisons, or otherwise “the institutions, structures, and practices of anti-Black state-sanctioned violence.” He made headlines last month after he called for the release of Mumia Abu-Jamal, who was convicted of killing a Philadelphia police officer in 1981.

“We’re in the midst of a movement that says ‘Black Lives Matter,’” Mr. Kaepernick said Nov. 18. “And if that’s truly the case, then it means that Mumia’s life and legacy must matter. And the causes that he sacrificed his life and freedom for must matter as well.”

Ben and Jerry’s announced its support for the “defund the police” movement in June during the national George Floyd unrest.
