San Francisco Mayor London Breed attended a birthday party at the elite French Laundry restaurant in Napa Valley just one night after Gov. Gavin Newsom’s appearance at the same restaurant drew widespread condemnation.

Ms. Breed dined at the three-star Michelin restaurant in Yountville on Nov. 7 to celebrate socialite Gorretti Lo Lui’s 60th birthday, the mayor’s spokesman Jeff Cretan confirmed to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The mayor was one of eight people who dined in the same kind of partially enclosed room, described by some journalists as a “fancy garage,” as Mr. Newsom did the night prior. Mr. Newsom had later apologized for making a “bad mistake” and going against his own coronavirus restrictions after critics on the right and left blasted him as a hypocrite for not wearing a mask and not socially distancing among people outside his household, as evidenced in photos.

Meanwhile, Ms. Breed’s spokesman described the event the mayor attended as a “small family birthday dinner,” though he didn’t disclose how many households were involved, the Chronicle reported. Gatherings with more than three households are still prohibited in the state.

Mr. Cretan emphasized that indoor and outdoor dining were allowed in Napa and San Francisco counties at the time of Ms. Breed’s dinner.

“Now, with case rates rising, and Bay Area counties moving back into the purple tier, she is once again limiting her actions and is encouraging all San Franciscans to do the same,” the spokesman said.

At the time of the mayor’s dinner, restaurants in her own city of San Francisco were ordered not to host groups larger than six people unless everyone lived together. Three days after dining at The French Laundry, she banned indoor dining, the Chronicle reported.
