CAYCE, S.C. (AP) - The body of a teenage swimmer who was pulled from a river in South Carolina has been identified.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said Thursday, in a news release, that Javion Cannon, 17, is suspected of drowning in the Congaree River. Witnesses told investigators that the teenager stood on rocks Wednesday and jumped about halfway between a boat landing in Cayce and the Blossom Street Bridge.

Investigators said the teenager went underwater and never resurfaced, The State reported.

A search for him began about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday and his body was found around 9 p.m., the Cayce Department of Public Safety said.

The Richland County Sheriff Department’s dive team, along with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Columbia Fire Department assisted with the search.

During the search for Cannon, another person was rescued. That person was tubing before falling into the river, and was trying to swim out of the current in the same area Cannon was last seen, Cayce DPS said.
