Actress Kirstie Alley on Monday praised President Trump’s leadership, saying his “boundless energy” and “willingness to solve problems” is what the country needs as it grapples with the coronavirus pandemic.

“Dear Mr. President,” the former “Cheers” star and noted Scientologist tweeted. “I wanted to thank you for ur recent decorum, sincerity, & care towards us. You’re taking charge & leading in a manner needed & wanted for this country.

“I highly commend you for ur boundless energy & willingness to solve problems. Thank you,” she wrote.

The tweet touched off a wave of criticism against the actress and her name became a top trending topic on the platform Tuesday morning.

Ms. Alley appeared unfazed by the reaction.

“I compliment people when they do well … blah blah blah,” she tweeted.

This isn’t the first time Ms. Alley has come under fire from the left. In December, she sparked a backlash after she slammed democratic socialism during a Twitter spat with former Hillary Clinton campaign adviser Peter Daou.

“I will never NEVER be agreeable to a Socialist government,” she wrote at the time, “and your renaming it ‘democratic socialist’ is as a dumb as ‘gentle nazi’…so save your ink and move along.”

Mr. Trump thanked the actress for her kind words in a tweet Tuesday morning.
