LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Police in Kentucky said they are searching for a woman who escaped police custody Monday by slipping out of her handcuffs and stealing a mail truck.

Lexington police are looking for Brandi Spears, 23, who evaded authorities while at a hospital, news outlets reported.

Police Lt. Samantha Moore said Spears was detained at a Sam’s Club Monday morning for outstanding warrants.

Spears said she needed medical attention following the arrest and was taken to a nearby hospital where she escaped, police said.

Moore said Spears stole a University of Kentucky mail truck and drove it back to her vehicle at the Sam Club’s parking lot. She later fled in her car, which is a gray SUV.

Moore said some mail was missing from the truck when it was recovered. The truck’s back door was open when Spears drove off, and the mail may have fallen out, Moore said.

In addition to the outstanding warrants, Spears has been charged with escaping police and theft of the mail truck. She’s been missing since Monday night.

A second person was detained with Spears at Sam’s Club. He was charged with public intoxication.
