FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - A 22-year-old Fayetteville man has been arrested in the stabbing death of a man believed to be the father of the suspect’s girlfriend, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Samuel Appling was arrested shortly before midnight Thursday when he collapsed while running from the scene where John Hurlburt, 53, was found dead in his home, Cantrell said.

Jail records show Appling is being held without bond on a murder warrant and do not list an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Hurlburt had called authorities and reported he used a stun gun on a would-be burglar, then hit the man in the head with a weight. Hurlburt identified the man as his daughter’s boyfriend, then stopped talking and could be heard apparently screaming for help, Cantrell said.

Cantrell said deputies arrived to see Appling running from the scene and gave chase until Appling collapsed.

Authorities say Appling was carrying a blood-covered knife and pistol.
