Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Thursday that people should be paid with taxpayer funds to stay home during the coronavirus pandemic.

“To get the virus under control, we need to pay people to stay home,” the New York democratic socialist tweeted to her 10.4 million followers.

“30 million people in this country are at risk of eviction,” she wrote a day earlier. “Millions of people are unemployed or underemployed from cut-back hours. The economy is not the stock market. We are NOT doing fine. People need help in red states and blue, & our job is to help everyone. This is basic.”

Left-wing Democrats have argued in favor of sending every household monthly stimulus checks for the duration of the pandemic.

Fellow “Squad” member Rep. Ilhan Omar tweeted a similar sentiment soon after the congresswoman Thursday afternoon, writing, “We need to send every American a check until this crisis is over.”

During a recent virtual town hall, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez accused President Trump and Republicans of failing to pass another stimulus package before the election, saying monthly checks would ideally be in the next package.

“I’ve championed monthly stimulus checks to folks in the country and everyone that needs it since the pandemic started,” she said, QNS reported. “I was really, really hoping that we were going to be able to cut a deal before the election.”

In a tweet, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez wrote, “Can we please get people stimulus checks and mortgage relief and rent forgiveness and small business support and free testing and hazard pay and healthcare for the uninsured (& underinsured) in the middle of a pandemic or is that too socialist too?”
