BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Police in Alabama responded to a burglary which led to a car chase in which shots were fired at officers from multiple agencies and at least one cruiser crashed. One suspect was arrested while another got away, authorities said.

Hueytown police were initially called to Birmingham Auto Auction late Sunday on a report of a burglary alarm, Hueytown Police Chief Mike Yarbrough, Pell City Police Chief Paul Irwin and Birmingham police spokesman Sgt. Rod Mauldin said in a joint statement obtained by news outlets.

Officials said that when officers tried to block a vehicle at the business, a suspect shot at officers. One Hueytown police car was struck by gunfire, but no one was injured, the agencies said.

Officers then pursued the suspect’s SUV onto a highway. At least one other Hueytown police car was struck by gunfire during the chase, Al.com reported, citing officials.

Birmingham police were called to assist as the chase entered their jurisdiction, and shots were again fired at officers, authorities said. A Birmingham officer later lost control of their vehicle and crashed. The officer was taken to a hospital for evaluation, but no injuries were immediately reported.

The suspect’s vehicle continued at speeds reaching 115 mph (185 kph). The Jefferson and St. Clair County sheriff’s offices and Riverside police also joined in the chase, the agencies said.

St. Clair deputies deployed spike strips and the suspect was stopped, Al.com said. A Riverside police patrol vehicle was also struck by gunfire.

One suspect was taken into custody and a second escaped into nearby woods, according to officials. Police were continuing to search for the at-large suspect and the investigation remained ongoing late Sunday.

No identities were released and no charges were immediately announced.
