HILLSBORO, Mo. (AP) - An eastern Missouri man has been charged with murder and nearly two dozen other counts after the death of a woman who was in a car he hit while fleeing police last month, authorities said.

Dustin Scott Fernow, 34, is charged with second-degree murder, property damage, resisting arrest, 10 counts of armed criminal action and 10 counts of assault, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Police say Fernow led officers on a chase through Arnold on Sept. 2, including on the grounds of a school, hitting several police cars and other vehicles. Prosecutors say in court documents that a passenger in one of those cars, Carroll Politte, died from her injuries on Saturday. Police said the chase began when officers tried to stop Fernow’s car for not having license plates, and Fernow instead fled.

Fernow’s next court date is set for January. A message left Friday morning with his public defender was not immediately returned.
