NORTH MASSAPEQUENA, N.Y. (AP) - A wrong-way driver on Long Island’s Southern State Parkway crashed into another vehicle, killing himself and three people in the other car and injuring two others, police said.

Marvin Balcaseres, 33, entered parkway going the wrong way early Tuesday and drove until he hit another car, state police said.

Ruben Sanchez-Flores, 67, was driving the vehicle that was hit. He was killed in the crash along with passengers Edith Magana, 56, and Ivis Sanchez-Cordova, 34, Newsday reported.

The fourth person in the car, Nadia Sanchez-Cordova, 44, was taken to a hospital with severe injuries.

People called 911 shortly after 5 a.m. to report a wrong-way driver, state police said, and future calls reported the car had crashed into another in North Massapequa.

A motorcycle hit the wreckage of the vehicles, and the rider, Roberto Mack, 32, was taken to the hospital. He is expected to survive, the newspaper reported. Another vehicle also hit the two cars, though the driver was not injured.

State police said eastbound lanes were shut for five hours after the crash, which sent up smoke and debris across the road.

Police are still investigating where exactly Balcaseres entered the parkway and whether he might have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
