POWNAL, Vt. (AP) - A fire that destroyed the grandstand of an abandoned Vermont racetrack is considered suspicious, firefighters said.
The Pownal Fire Department says the fire, which was reported late Wednesday and burned into Thursday morning, is suspicious because the track has been abandoned for years.
No injuries have been reported, but the building is considered a total loss. Firefighters from a number of area departments battled the blaze.
The track opened in 1963 with thoroughbred and harness racing. In the 1970s, it was converted to greyhound racing. It closed in 1991.
Over the years, there were numerous, unsuccessful efforts to reopen or redevelop the track.
