SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Police have made an arrest in a fatal weekend shooting in Springfield.

Christian Velez, 37, was arrested at a Chicopee home on Wednesday, Springfield police spokesman Ryan Walsh said. Police also recovered a gun. He faces several charges including murder and carrying a firearm without a license, police said.

Velez shot Isaunder Perez-Gonzalez, 26, of Springfield, on Saturday morning at Velez’s apartment not far from police headquarters on Pearl Street, according to the Hampden district attorney’s office.



The investigation found that the victim came to the apartment to speak with Velez and there was an argument before the gunfire, police said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting is the city’s 15th homicide of the year. There were 20 homicides in Springfield in 2019.

No information about an arraigmment was released and it’s not clear if the suspect has an attorney.
