SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A 22-year-old man has been arrested in a double-shooting that left one man dead at a Santa Fe commuter rail station, police said Wednesday.

Matthew Arellano was arrested Tuesday evening on charges of murder, attempted murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, a police statement said.

Police previously identified the man who died after being shot and also stabbed as David Hernandez, 24. The identity of a 38-year-old man who was shot and critically wounded was not released.

Arellano remained jailed Wednesday and online court records didn’t indicate he had a defense attorney who might comment on his behalf.

A police affidavit said Arellano told officers he shot both men in self-defense to protect himself and a friend after being jumped and robbed of his belongings by one of the men, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported..

The affidavit said witnesses told police hey saw two men run up to the station platform and attack Hernandez and the other victim as they sat on a bench.

After the attack, the two attackers got into a car and drove away, the witnesses told police.

Police were still seeking the second man they believe was involved in the attack.
