A Montgomery County Public Schools staff member who reportedly masturbated during a Zoom call with eighth-graders said he was placed on administrative leave.

Marc Schack, a history teacher’s aide at Shady Grove Middle School, told Bethesda Magazine that he thought the class was over and that he had already logged off when the incident occurred.

According to a 13-second clip of the incident, Bethesda Magazine reported, Mr. Schack looks at his screen, stands up, takes a few steps away and starts pleasuring himself.

“I had no clue that Zoom was still on,” Mr. Schack told the magazine Wednesday. “Why would I do that? That’s my job. My career. I had no clue that Zoom was on. I mean, that’s just crazy behavior.”

He said the school system placed him on administrative leave this week pending an investigation.

Shady Grove Principal Alana Murray said in a letter to parents that the staff member was seen on screen in a breakout room “engaged in inappropriate behavior,” but she declined to get specific.

Meanwhile, Montgomery County police said Thursday that they investigated the incident and “it did not rise to the level of a criminal offense under Maryland law,” Bethesda magazine reported.

Mr. Schack, who is also a children’s performer with a business called Pirate Magic, said it was a “horrible mistake” that he regrets.

“It was not done intentionally,” he told FOX 5. “I had no clue that I was on video.

“I don’t know what else to say,” he added. “I’m a good guy, you know. I was just in privacy of my own home and I didn’t mean any ill will. I didn’t do anything on purpose.”
