Actor Chris Clanton, who starred as a gang member in the Baltimore-based hit TV series “The Wire,” said “something has to change” about the city’s crime after he was shot on the street last week.

Mr. Clanton, who played Savino Bratton in the HBO crime series until his character was fatally shot in a 2008 episode, was shot in the ear in Baltimore‘s Belair-Parkside neighborhood on April 29. He told FOX 45 that he thought he was going to die.

“A shot rang out, and before I knew it I was blown up against the car,” he said. “I felt the blood but I didn’t really realize it.”

Mr. Clanton said he still can’t hear out of his left ear after a bullet pierced it and left fragments in his head.

“I am pissed,” he said. “I am pissed, because it’s uncalled for. My son was not far from this incident. He was in the vicinity. Luckily, he didn’t see what happened.”

“I’m from here, I love it,” he said. “Like, this is where I’m from. I’ll always embrace it, but something has to change.”

Mr. Clanton said he doesn’t believe he was the intended target of the gunfire, and that a Baltimore police officer’s quick response saved his life.

Baltimore’s Metro Crime Stoppers is calling on members of the public to send any tips regarding the shooting to their tip line.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said Tuesday he’s “very concerned” about the rising crime in Baltimore, which has experienced a 17% increase in homicides in 2021 compared to the same time last year.

Last month, the Republican governor slammed a plan by Baltimore‘s Democratic mayor, Brandon Scott, to slash the city’s police budget, calling the idea “reckless,” Fox News reported.
