Presidents like to tell the American people what they want to hear, and they often speak before thinking through the ramifications of their remarks. Joe Biden is in this category.

Eyebrows have understandably been raised with the president’s recent proclamation in a “60 Minutes” interview that the coronavirus plague is over (“Biden on ‘60 Minutes’: The pandemic is over,” Web, Sept. 19). Enormous progress has indeed been made in defeating the virus, first through President Trump getting the vaccine developed in record time and then through President Biden, who got it distributed with lightning speed. It is premature, however, to declare mission accomplished, particularly before fall and winter, times of the year in which more of us are indoors and in close contact with others.

I fear that the declaration of victory over COVID-19 will cause many to discard reasonable precautions. If there is a resurgence of the virus, the president will have egg on his face.
