Ovechkin, Capitals eye another run at Cup with one of NHL's oldest rosters

Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals are going gray gracefully with an eye on winning the big silver trophy one more time. More than three years removed from hoisting the Stanley Cup, the Capitals are once again of the NHL's oldest teams. Players think that's a good thing, with the bulk of the championship core still around and their sights set on extending their playoff streak to seven.

Ovechkin begins 5-year contract chasing Gretzky's goals mark

Ovechkin starts a new five-year contract with the Washington Capitals with 730 goals, 165 away from passing Gretzky. The Russian superstar is 36 and would need to score at a pace never before seen from an older player to approach that mark by the time his contract is up.

Eyes shift to Kraken's debut, full schedule as NHL season begins

The season gets under way Tuesday night when the back-to-back champion Tampa Bay Lightning raise another banner and host the Pittsburgh Penguins, the last team to win the Cup twice in a row in 2016 and 2017. The Kraken also play their first regular-season game -- at Vegas, four years after the Golden Knights were the league's last expansion team.

Lapierre impresses Capitals staff with Backstrom on shelf

The hole in the middle of the Washington Capitals lineup with Nicklas Backstrom out injured looked looked tailor made for 2019 first-round pick Connor McMichael. The spot still might be his. But 2020 first-rounder Hendrix Lapierre, who is a year younger and came in with less fanfare, has been among the biggest training camp surprises around the NHL and could land a spot on the opening night roster.

Former Capitals goalie Philipp Grubauer excelling with Avalanche

Philipp Grubauer was named a finalist on Tuesday for the Vezina Trophy, given to the league's best goalie. And while the Capitals started their summer early, Grubauer is leading the Avalanche in the postseason, with five wins in five starts, leaving his playoff struggles in 2018 in the rearview mirror.

Capitals don't see aging core as issue
