Thom Loverro has been a professional journalist since 1977, working for a number of newspapers, including eight years as a news editor and reporter for The Baltimore Sun, where he covered government, politics, and crime. He moved into sports writing when he joined The Washington Times in 1992. He moved to The Washington Examiner as a sports columnist in 2009 and returned to The Washington Times in 2013, where he is currently the lead sports columnist.

Lefty the Showman passed away Saturday at the age of 92 and the DMV sports community -- marked these days by dullness and depression -- mourned not just the man, but the excitement he created that still resonates to this day.

What was the pregame drama all about? Was it to remind everyone that the Chiefs, who posted an 11-6 record this season and who were 4 1/2 point underdogs going into the game against the 13-4 Ravens, were the defending champs and recent two-time winners of the Super Bowl? LOVERRO: Interesting event in Lions history spawned famous Plimpton book

The Detroit Lions don't have much of a championship history. But they have one particular unique chapter in franchise history that took place 60 years ago during the 1963 NFL season, when a Sports Illustrated writer reported to Lions training camp to play quarterback -- and wrote a memorable book about the experience.
