A rainbow flag hangs from the office of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee at City Hall Wednesday, June 26, 2013. The Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down a provision of a U.S. law denying federal benefits to married gay couples and cleared the way for the resumption of same-sex marriage in the state of California. The justices issued two 5-4 rulings in their final session of the term. One decision wiped away part of a federal anti-gay marriage law that has kept legally married same-sex couples from receiving tax, health and pension benefits. The other was a technical legal ruling that said nothing at all about same-sex marriage, but left in place a trial court's declaration that California's Proposition 8 is unconstitutional. The HealthCare.gov website is photographed in Washington on Dec. 15, 2017. A burst of sign-ups is punctuating the end of a tumultuous year for former President Barack Obamas health care law. Strong consumer interest around Fridays enrollment deadline for 2018 was seen as validation for the programs subsidized individual health insurance. But the Affordable Care Acts troubles arent over. Even if full repeal now seems off the table, actions by the Republican-led Congress and the Trump administration could undermine the ACAs insurance markets. (AP Photo/Jon Elswick
