A Florida-based civil rights group is complaining about the decision of the University of South Florida (USF) to host a sports event that Americans Against Hate (AAH) says is linked to a violent Muslim organization.
The Muslim American Society (MAS) of Tampa will be hosting its 2006 MAS Olympics March 11 and 12 at the USF campus. MAS is “linked to the violent Muslim Brotherhood,” said AAH Chairman Joe Kaufman, citing newspaper and magazine reports.
The Muslim Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928, aims “to create Muslim states overseas and, they hope, someday in America as well,” the Chicago Tribune reported.
“What kind of university would allow for an outside group that is actively propagating hatred and violence to children to use its facilities?” Mr. Kaufman wrote to USF officials Feb. 10.
Steven D. Prevaux, general counsel for USF, said: “Having checked on this issue briefly, it appears that this event has been permitted in accord with the established university procedures for use of intramural fields.”
