Hoyas Report

Seen and heard last night at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn:

VERSUS NO .1 — Georgetown has had little success over the years against the No. 1 team in the nation, going 1-6. Georgetown’s only win over a No. 1 was in February 1985 when John Thompson’s second-ranked Hoyas blasted St. John’s 85-69. The 1985 season was a banner year for the Big East with Georgetown, St. John’s and Villanova all advancing to the Final Four.

TOUGH TICKET— The game was the 100th advance sellout at Gampel Pavilion since UConn’s on-campus facility opened in 1990. Coincidentally, they recorded their 100th men’s sellout at Hartford Civic Center, UConn’s other homecourt, against Virginia Tech exactly one year ago.

ONE THAT GOT AWAY — What happened to Maryland and Georgetown in the recruiting process for Josh Boone? UConn’s 6-foot-10 freshman forward is from Mount Airy, Md., has started all 14 games this season and is averaging 5.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks. Boone is just the 12th freshman to crack UConn coach Jim Calhoun’s starting lineup in his 18 years in Storrs.

SHARING THE WEALTH — UConn leads the nation with 292 assists. Coming into the game, the Huskies have assisted on 63.8 percent (292 of 458) of their field goals.
