The family of a former University of Maryland assistant football coach is offering a $500 reward for the return of his ashes, which were stolen from the trunk of his son’s car Oct.5 at the Fairfield Inn in Jessup, Md.
The coach, Dick Redding, was an assistant under Jerry Claiborne at Maryland from 1971 to 1981, working with the offensive line, kickers and junior varsity. Redding, who died of bladder cancer at 86 on Aug.27 in Lexington, Ky., also coached with Claiborne at Virginia Tech and Kentucky before and after their tenure at Maryland.
Redding’s ashes were contained in a light-colored cardboard container with the name “Harold Richard Redding” typed on the front. After spreading some of the ashes at Kentucky’s Commonwealth Stadium, Virginia Tech’s Lane Stadium and Maryland’s Byrd Stadium, his son, Dick Redding II, was en route to Maine to spread the remainder in his father’s home state.
A native of Lewiston, Maine, the elder Reading coached for five years at Davidson College and 18 years at Virginia Tech before coming to Maryland.
The family is offering the reward with no questions. Anyone with knowledge of the theft is asked to call Dick Redding II at 434/760-5973.
