A fresh start
Canadian singer Feist started big, opening for the Hall of Fame punk rockers the Ramones, but when too much singing damaged her vocal cords she had to find a different way. She rested, learned guitar, eased her way back working with Kings of Convenience and Broken Social Scene and now has gone solo. That’s landed her back in the big time. 100 million and going
Bon Jovi has been around for two decades. Its record sales total more than 100 million. Yet the four guys from New Jersey still aren’t finished. The group’s newest release, “Have A Nice Day,” debuted at No. 2 on the music charts and the band makes its second stop in the District in less than two months, playing the MCI Center tonight. One more New Year
They may not have a ball drop, but the Chinese New Year parade does have dragon dancers, one big firecracker and plenty of music. This year’s parade marks the Year of the Dog and winds through Chinatown between Sixth and Eighth streets NW, from I to G and back, on Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m. The five-story firecracker will be lit at 3:30 p.m. 202/506-5438.
Opera’s new faces
Il Divo is the opera equivalent to ’NSync . From its formation after a worldwide search to the four guys’ cover-model looks, it has all the trappings of a one-hit wonder. But the guys can actually sing, and have a string of international No. 1 hits and a nearly sold-out world tour to prove it. The group showcases its vocal talents tomorrow at DAR Constitution Hall. Dancing in the District
The next week is an exciting one for fans of professional dance. Several troupes from all over the world will showcase their talents in a variety of venues.
• The American Ballet Theatre and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater both have extended runs in the Kennedy Center Opera House. ABT puts on the classic “Romeo & Juliet” tomorrow through Sunday. Alvin Ailey follows on Tuesday with a six-night run of performances, many of them Washington premieres. Showtimes and ticket prices vary. F Street and New Hampshire Avenue Northwest. 202/467-4600.
• The George Washington University Lisner Auditorium once again plays host to the Sixth Annual DC Flamenco Festival, which kicks off tonight with beginner flamenco dance lessons at 7 and 8 p.m. The festival continues on Saturday with the Nuevo Ballet Espanol in “Flamenco Directo,” and on Wednesday with guitarist Vicente Amigo. • The Music Center at Strathmore hopes to gain a little luck of the Irish when the Trinity Irish Dancers bring their high-kicking Celtic dance steps to the stage tomorrow night.
