Rain takes toll on trees

The rain keeps falling and falling, and the deluge is taking scores of Washington-area trees down with it.

“We lost hundreds of trees, mature trees, but at this point I couldn’t even begin to give you an estimate” of the damage, said Susan Hubbard, a spokeswoman for the Prince George’s Department of Public Works and Transportation.

She said the county was monitoring the rain today.

The same storm that forced a brief evacuation of the National Mall yesterday continued in the afternoon yesterday, and the National Weather Service issued a flash-flood warning for the District, Fairfax County, Arlington County and Alexandria.

Prince George’s County had to request help from six crews in addition to its regular work force to clear roads and sidewalks of trees and debris.

The Hyattsville area was particularly hard hit, and workers were still clearing debris yesterday afternoon.

Officials said some areas got as much as two inches more rainfall this afternoon.
