Opening Day injuries land two on DL

Opening Day proved costly for the Nationals, who placed outfielder Nook Logan and shortstop Cristian Guzman on the 15-day disabled list yesterday. Both are expected to be out two to three weeks.

To fill Logan's spot on the active roster, the Nationals recalled outfielder Kory Casto from Class AAA Columbus.

Casto flew to the District yesterday aboard a private jet with Columbus Clippers officials, who were invited to last night's game.

"I'm glad I'm coming back, and it's unfortunate that it's got to be under these circumstances," Casto said.

Logan strained his left foot when it got caught in the center field wall after he chased a line drive in the fourth inning of Monday's 9-2 loss to the Florida Marlins.

Guzman, who missed last season with torn labrum in his throwing shoulder, strained his left hamstring breaking out of the batter's box on a groundball to third in the fifth inning Monday.

The Nationals are expected to recall infielder D'Angelo Jimenez from Columbus sometime today.

Casto started in left field and batted second in his major league debut last night. He singled to center in the fourth inning and finished 1-for-4 with a walk.

"I was floating there a little bit, but I've been there before," said Casto, who plans to keep the ball and give the bat to his parents. "This level is the same as every other level. You've got to go out there and give it your best every at-bat, every swing, every pitch."

Casto hit .280 with a .368 on-base percentage in 22 spring games this year. Casto, who has never played above Class AA, was one of the club's last cuts and was expected to be recalled sometime during the season.
