SEEN AND HEARD
A few area sports celebrities were in attendance. Baltimore Orioles pitcher Adam Loewen and outfielder Nick Markakis were shown on the scoreboard and were met with a strong chorus of boos. Loewen, a Canadian, is an avid hockey fan and both players were in the Caps dressing room after the game. D.C. United midfielder Ben Olsen also was shown on the jumbotron and received a much better reception.
PROSPECT UPDATE
Goaltender Michael Neuvirth, a second-round pick in the 2006 draft by the Caps, stopped 34 of 35 shots Friday night for Plymouth of the Ontario Hockey League and was named the game’s first star in a 4-1 win against Ottawa. Neuvirth leads the OHL in save percentage (.930) and is third in GAA (2.37) for the Whalers, who are in first place in the OHL West Division.
OVECHKIN WATCH
With a goal and an assist, Alex Ovechkin extended his points streak to 11 games, which ties for the second longest stretch in the NHL this season behind a 12-contest streak from Tampa Bay’s Martin St. Louis.
